KIDNEYS BEYOND BORDERS
Build a world where nobody will die from kidney failure due to unavailability of treatment
WHO WE ARE
We are an organization of American physicians from the Pakistani diaspora who aim to build a world where treatment for kidney failure is accessible to all. Kidneys beyond borders was founded by Dr. Irfan Munir, a practicing nephrologist in the United States and a graduate of King Edward Medical University. Dr. Munir has more than 25 years of experience in the field of nephrology with a special interest in home dialysis. Dr. Munir has also served as an advisory board member of Davita, one of the largest dialysis companies in the world, NANI, and Byonyks. He is also an adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine and has served as the President of KEMCAANA, an Alumni Association of his alma mater.
Dr. Munir is passionate about giving back to his home country which is what motivated him to start this project. Pakistan is currently a poverty-stricken country where a majority of patients suffering from kidney failure die due to the inability to afford treatment. There are approximately 500,000 kidney failure patients in Pakistan, but only 30,000 are receiving treatment. The number of patients who need treatment for kidney failure increases annually by 100,000. A Majority of patients are being treated with hemodialysis in conditions where there is poor infection control practices and a higher risks of contracting Hepatitis C. Peritoneal dialysis use is very low due to the lack to infrastructure and trained nephrologists needed for this treatment. We collaborated with the biotechnology and pharmacology industry in Pakistan to create infrastructure for providing peritoneal dialysis treatment in Pakistan. We also conducted extensive symposiums, seminars, and workshops in Pakistan to train physicians and paramedical staff about Peritoneal Dialysis.
We began our clinical operation in February of 2023 in the nephrology department of the Mayo Hospital Lahore. We have grown steadily since our inception and our quality of data is comparable to that of the United States. Our goal is to continue to steadily grow and begin to implement our project into other parts of Pakistan. We also hope to take our expertise and technology to other underdeveloped and developing countries throughout the world to provide assistance where it is most needed. Kidneys beyond borders relies on donations and with your help we can continue to help more and more patients in Pakistan and across the world.
We are a 501(c)3 registered charitable organization with Federal Tax ID# 93-4707401 in the United States and any donations are fully tax deductible.
